Some clients attend for assistance with addictive behaviours, these can include smoking, drug, alcohol, gambling, sex, self harming behaviours, food abuse and detrimental patterns of behaviour (eg: involved in domestic violence) I utilise the "Turning Point" Drug & Alcohol Resources to assist with each individuals addictive issue and work with the person in assisting them with education about their issue often linking and referring to others also experiencing the same addiction. This is supportive in most cases learning your 'triggers' to why, when and how it occurs gives insight into the problem and also can help develop strategies to combat them and be in control. Some people who choose to change their lives find confronting themselves and their addictions very challenging and one of the hardest things to overcome. Realising the human being is not perfect can also be a difficult 'pill' to swallow. Once a person has undergone a "detoxification" often the reality of daily living can be a shock as the pattern of behaviour is stopped mid cycle and sent on another path. (Detoxification is normally commenced under the supervision of your treating physician) The person often looks back at the chaos that was their previous life of addiction and is usually surprised why it happened in the first place. There is often a sadness that can occur as the effects can be devastating on families, friends and employment. Once the addiction issue is under control, the next challenge is to replace it with something else as the person may have an addictive personality and often, will just go from one addiction to another eg; stop drinking beer, take up drinking coke. This is where personal goal setting and reflective process is beneficial as the person can review their patterns, set personal goals to where they want to be in 1 hour, 1 day, 1 month, 1 year, 2 years 5 years and 10 years and so on and understand that as we are only human, it is not the end of the world if they have a relapse, it is not a failure, just a small setback and with support, since they have changed themselves once, they have the ability to do it again. |
